At the end of 2012’s The Avengers, Agent Coulson met a heartbreaking death at the hands of Loki, and the team of superheroes were left mourning their hero.
But what the Avengers don’t know is that Coulson has been alive and kicking for several years now, over on Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D – but as the two worlds of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have not yet met it means that Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and Black Widow are actually still in the dark about Coulson’s revival.
Will they ever discover the truth?
‘When they feel like it’s time to start connecting any of these worlds, they will,’ said Clark Gregg, who has played Coulson since 2008’s Iron Man.
‘I feel like I’ll hear from them then, but in the meantime, I have my hands full trying to do a good job on [S.H.I.E.L.D.].’
Coulson was the reason that the first phase of Marvel films were tied together; a mysterious man in a suit who always appeared at the scene of devastation.
He soon introduced our world and theirs to the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division, or S.H.I.E.L.D and he went on to make appearances in Iron Man 2, Thor, and two short films before The Avengers.
In the TV show – which has yet to be renewed and so is currently working on the premise that the season finale will be the last – Coulson is thought to be dying, although the reasons are not yet known, so let’s hope the Avengers do find out about his reappearance sooner rather than later.
‘It’s certainly something that will get resolved, and it may get resolved in a very surprising way,’ head of Marvel Television and S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jeph Loeb told EW.com.
End credits scene, anyone?
