Any attempt by British Prime Minister Theresa May to hold up or reverse Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union would provoke the country’s worst constitutional crisis since World War II, Brexit advocate Nigel Farage said Monday.
The former UKIP leader, who helped spark the Brexit movement by convincing former Prime Minister David Cameron to hold a national referendum on the issue, told Reuters that Britain is being humiliated in negotiations over the departure from the EU. He dubbed May “Theresa the Appeaser,” and denounced Britain’s political establishment for trying to stop Brexit.
“The best case scenario right now under our current pathetic leadership is Brexit in name only — that is about as good as it gets,” Farage said. “At worst they are going to make us fight the whole thing again.”
“That is a significant betrayal of what many millions voted for,” he added.
In the 2016 referendum, voters supported Brexit by a slim margin — 51.9 percent, or 17.4 million people, voted to leave the EU while 48.1 percent, or 16.1 million people, voted to stay. Since the vote, opponents have been trying to build a coalition in Britain’s lower house of Parliament that could block a withdrawal agreement negotiated between May’s government and Brussels.
May is set to outline the government’s plan for Brexit in a speech next month, reports The Independent. The key sticking points in a transition deal involve trade agreements and how closely Britain will remain tied to the EU common market, if at all.
Many of Britain’s prominent establishment media outlets and political leaders are opposed to Britain’s leaving the EU. They argue that it will inflict lasting damage on the country’s economy and diminsh London’s status as a word financial center. Prominent Brexit opponents in the financial world include Lloyd Blankfein, the CEO of Goldman Sachs, and George Soros, the billionaire who gained fame — and riches — by shorting the British pound in the early 1990s.
Farage said Soros and Goldman Sachs could be cast in a “horror movie” about what so-called “remainers” look like. He also called for an investigation into Soros’ political funding activities.
“This is the biggest political campaigning organization the world has ever seen and most people are in denial about it,” Farage told Reuters.
