It’s been a Hell of a week for comic fans, with Marvel and DC movie news flying thick and fast.

Coming fresh on the heels of Joaquin Phoenix being put front and centre in the next Joker film, it seems that another DC villain could be getting a brand new makeover in Chris McKay’s Nightwing. Namely, The Penguin.

Info about the Dick Grayson standalone film has been scarce on the ground, but on Friday the director let fans in on some news when he revealed that he was close to closing on a finished script.

But, despite his warning that casting was a long way off, The Lego Batman director may have already found his antagonist in Josh Gad – if a cheeky tweet is anything to go by.

The rumour mill started churning on the Internet earlier on today when Gad, 36, replied to McKay after he posted a poll asking what type of actor fans would want to see playing Batman’s former ward. Something which sparked speculation among eagle-eyed fans of all things Grayson and Batman.

What did he do? The Frozen actor posted a gif of Danny DeVito’s iconic Oswald Cobblepot, AKA The Penguin.

This is obviously still just speculation as McKay made it clear that he wasn’t prepared to confirm anything about the Nightwing film – despite fans clamoring for news. And on top of that, Josh may have just been trolling the director with an excellent Batman-themed gif.

In fact, news regarding even the briefest of plots is thin on the ground.

And the director took pains to hammer home that he was in now way ready to confirm any details when he responded to a question about the film.

‘Hi! Some early VDay news: Nightwing script expected very soon. Working on rip-o-matic to show studio. This is going to be a LONG process. So don’t expect casting news any time soon. We are taking our time. Expect big things from DC, Geoff Johns and WB team! Exciting year ahead!!’ He tweeted.

More: Batman

One thing the director has previously revealed is that he will tackle Dick Grayson’s circus background, and even teased that the film will feature a lot of real stuntwork so it makes sense that the public wants someone who can deliver on this front (hence the question on Twitter).

You know what they say though? Good things come to those who wait.

The Penguin is one of Batman’s oldest and most enduring foes, having first appeared in Detective Comics #58 back in 1941.

The eccentric criminal mastermind and keen ornithologist has made a big screen outing before opposite Michael Keaton in 1992’s Batman Returns, and more recently in Gotham, played by Robin Taylor.
