Former Hollyoaks actress Rachel Shenton has been nominated for an Academy Award, five years after leaving the soap.
Rachel was known to soap fans as Mitzeee Minniver in the E4 soap from 2010 to 2013, but has been nominated for Best Live Action Short for The Silent Child, which Shenton wrote, produced and starred in.
The short follows the story of deaf four-year-old Libby – played by Maisie Sly – and after the nominatoions were announced the team behind the film took to Twitter to thanks the Academy.
‘Well…what can we say. Yesterday was a day we’ll never forget. Thank you again for the support,’ they tweeted.
Rachel added: ‘I am so incredibly proud of our team!’
Rachel’s father became deaf when she was a child, and that experience inspired her to make the film, along with director Chris Overton and producers Rebecca Harris and Danny Omerod.
The film will go up against DeKalb Elementary, 11 O’Clock, My Nephew Emmett, and Watu Wote: All of Us.
Guillermo del Toro’s gorgeous The Shape Of Water leads the pack for the 2018 Academy Awards with 13 nominations – but it is the appearance of Lady Bird and Get Out that had many film fans over the moon.
Both Get Out and Lady Bird had been considered critics choice front runners but in recent weeks there was concern over the likelihood that they may make an appearance in categories such as acting and directing – especially after both the Golden Globes and Baftas snubbed directors Jordan Peele for Get Out and Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird.
