Sure, you could tune in to any of the many stations sure to be showing The Ten Commandments on Easter Sunday, or you could head over to NBC for their broadcast of Jesus Christ Superstar Live, which just snapped up singer-songwriter and Broadway darling Sara Bareilles to play Mary Magdalene. Enjoy these last few months of not having “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” stuck in your head 24/7.
Bareilles, who composed and starred in the Broadway musical Waitress, will star opposite John Legend’s Jesus Christ as Mary Magdalene, the prostitute who acts as Jesus’s confidant in his final days before the Last Supper. Rock legend Alice Cooper will play King Herod.
“We’re overjoyed to have Sara Bareilles play Mary Magdalene and I can guarantee that her interpretation of the standard ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him’ will become an instant classic,” said N.B.C. Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Bareilles herself is also pretty thrilled. “To say I’m excited about this performance is the understatement of the century,” she said. “This score and this musical have been a part of my life from a very young age and it will be one of the great thrills of my life to sing these iconic songs. It’s incredible to see the beloved medium of musical theatre being embraced by television audiences, and this cast and creative team is extraordinary. I feel extremely lucky to be a part of the project!”
Jesus Christ Superstar Live will be broadcast from Marcy Armory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, N.Y., on Easter Sunday, April 1.
