2018 has started in the worst possible way for the Carter family in EastEnders as Mick Carter looks to have been shot as the heist went badly wrong – by a criminal who he appeared to recognise.
Mick had been drawn into Aidan Maguire’s shady job alongside Phil Mitchell, Vincent Hubbard and Keanu Taylor and things got off to a bad start when Shirley tried to stop Mick making it to where he needed to be.
However, as the plan got underway, things started to go more smoothly and, as instructed, the men in the van were lured to the Arches where the men were lying in wait armed with fake guns.
As they held up the van, Mick and Keanu were at the back and two of the criminals emerged. Mick locked eyes with one and exclaimed ‘it’s you!’ before a gunshot rang ut and a nearby Linda cried out in horror as it seemed she had just witnessed her husband be gunned down.
Of course, in true EastEnders tradition, we were left hanging. Had Mick been shot and if so, will he die? And how did he know the shooter? Has Aidan set him up to fall victim to the attack? And who is masterminding this whole thing?
The shooter was credited at the end of the episode as Callum ‘Halfway’ Highway played by Tony Clay and viewers with strong memories on Twitter recall that a mate of Lee’s who previously text Mick shared the name Halfway. Naturally, this can’t be a coincidence. So could Lee somehow be involved too?
There are more twists still to play out and plenty of questions to be answered.
But one answer that we have been waiting for for some time was earlier brushed away in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it scene as Max Branning confirmed to Jay Mitchell that he had blackmailed Phil into lying about he car lot fire victim being his dad, which is what prompted Jay to sell up the car lot land.
We’re sure that the questions posed tonight however, have more dramatic and climactic answers.
