While some soaps go down the route of murder, mayhem and destruction for their Christmas Day episodes, Emmerdale is taking a less conventional route this year and going all out, airing a bonkers episode made up almost entirely of fantasies and false realities – and it looks like a treat!
The drama centres on Robert Sugden as he repeatedly wakes up in several, increasingly unnerving scenarios. Taking inspiration from A Christmas Carol and Groundhog Day, the special edition of the soap sees Robert trapped by his own mind as he is presented with several different events – some realistic and some downright crazy.
The idea being that he ends up on a path to some sort of redemption after spending much of the year scheming and making mistakes. While the episode is very much Robert centric, it plays a heavy focus on the relationship he has with Aaron Dingle – and it will lead to decisions being made and big realisations being reached.
Some of the scenes will be emotional but the journey of Robert will be laced with humour too – with a cameo from a departed but much loved character being woven in too.
But how will the situation change Robert – and where will he go from here?
Meanwhile, back in the real world – or as real as soap can be – the Dingle Christmas Day is as raucous as ever and Gerry might be about to take the spirit of Christmas too literally. And when Aaron brings Dr Alex along for his first taste of Dingle Christmas life, he is gone before the welly boot filled with booze even comes out.
Spoilsport! Pass it our way, lads!
